Paper copies of competence assessments for porters (etc.) should be held for five years. The training or document control policies should state the required time period between each competency assessment (suggest up to 24 months max). At the five year time point, and assuming regular competence assessments have been performed and documented, it would be acceptable to record this information on a spreadsheet/logging system and discard the paper record from 5 years previous. This requires a more robust archiving system than many blood banks currently operate but gets out of the scenario where everything is held forever!
The assumption is that the competency/training records do not hold any unique information with regards to either cold chain or traceability compliance.
