This resource explaining abbreviations and medical terminology related to blood components was compiled by the Northern Assistant Transfusion Practitioner Group in January 2011 and can be found on the North East RTC education page.

Safe transfusion practice for FY1 doctors

Transfusion practitioners in West Yorkshire have successfully included safer transfusion practice in junior doctors’ training.

The West Yorkshire Deanery recognised the importance of covering safer transfusion practice in junior doctors’ Professional Development Plan (PDP) days but feedback had highlighted repetition in some training. Transfusion practitioners evaluated the existing training and developed a new training package for use on FY1 doctors’ PDP days.

The package includes several case studies of adverse reactions/events for small group discussion and feedback to the larger group and the scenarios can be changed. The training booklet has been designed for use by anyone delivering the training. Sessions run by two transfusion practitioners using four scenarios received excellent feedback from FY1 doctors.
